you may or may not have heard of them. they're the notoriously terrible nfl team representing phoenix who suddenly decided to kick enough spandex butt to make it to the super bowl this year.
don't know about you, but I am suddenly a fan. it seems that all of phoenix is coming together. everyone at albertson's was wearing cards jerseys on game day. even our church cheered them on with a "go cardinals" greeting on their marquee. and the stores can't keep cardinal gear on the shelves.
this past sunday, andrew and I walked from our sister's condo to our condo after watching the cardinals game that clenched their trip to the super bowl. we waved and cheered with the partiers a couple doors down who were in their garage celebrating the win.
but perhaps the most amazing part about the cardinals' historic win is that it caused an elderly neighbor who never, never acknowledges our energetic waves and hellos to actually speak to us. andrew and I walk past this particular guy pretty often and we always wave, and try to conjure up a hello from him. he usually just sits in his chair, staring straight ahead with a scowl on his face. we were beginning to think that he was actually blind, and perhaps deaf too.
but on sunday, before we could even eek out a wave or a hello, he bellowed "we're going to the super bowl!" it was literally the first time we have ever heard him utter a single word, and it mght be the last.
unless the cardinals win the super bowl.
which of course they will.
